Introduction to the club:
The fastest game on two feet? - You bet it is! Lacrosse is a highly skilful, quick and physical sport. It’s also a great spectator sport once you’ve figured out it is actually lacrosse you’re watching!
The origins of lacrosse are a little mysterious. We know that it probably originated from the Iroquois Indians or Native Americans and was developed in Europe by French Canadian settlers.
Recent successes:
The lacrosse club at Birmingham is always looking to expand and get more people involved. In 2006 a men’s squad was added to existing women’s 1st and 2nd and mixed teams. Last year this was taken a step further by adding a men’s 2nd team that play in the national league on a Saturday..
Over the last 3 years our women’s team has been extremely successful reaching the BUCS finals, showing that they are one of the best university teams in the country and in 2010 were crowned BUCS Champions. The men’s team, placed in one of the hardest leagues in BUCS did well to reach the semi-finals of the plate and are looking forward to next season as they look to continue their development. The women’s 2nd team have just recently gained promotion and won the Midlands Conference cup.
Training times & venues:
Monday: 7.45-10.00, women’s 1st & 2nd Bournbrook pitch 1
Tuesday: 18.00 -20.00, men’s 3G pitch
Wednesday: Match day! Afternoon draws
Thursday: 17.00-19.00, on the 3G pitch
Sunday: 14.00-16.00, mixed, Bournbrook
Interesting facts:
Don’t worry if you have no idea of the rules or even what a lacrosse stick looks like because every year both squads contain a number of players who have never played before. Saying that we do also have some very good players in our ranks, the women’s first team has four full internationals, 2 England under 21s and a number of players who represented the midlands in a national competition and in the men’s team all 3 players who went to south university trials got a place in the team.
The lacrosse club liaises with the local community in attempts to develop lacrosse within schools; we also actively raise funds and are planning some great events this coming year. We aim to achieve focus sport recognition within the coming years.
