Birmingham rowers take Varsity crown

Rowing Varisty 2011

The University of Birmingham Sport (UBSport) rowing team enjoyed a historic victory in their much anticipated Varsity match against local rivals Warwick University at Worcester Rowing Club on Saturday February 4.

The major event, which has not taken placed over the last six years, always promised to be a tight and competitive match, with both teams looking to take home the coveted Midlands Varsity Trophy.

However, as the day went on, Birmingham seemed to be in control, typified by the performance from the women’s beginner four, who were entered against Warwick’s championship four and defeated their opponents.

In fact, every women’s and beginner crew beat their Warwick rivals over the course of the day, helping Birmingham take the trophy with an impressive score of 120 points to 40.

The weekends action did not end there for the rowing club, as the following day they took part in the Head of the Severn Race, where school and universities from around the country came together to battle it out for the title.

Following on from the success of the previous day, there were stunning wins for many of our teams including the men’s championship quad, women’s beginner four, women’s beginner eight and men’s beginner four, whilst three teams came second in their categories.

These superb achievements come during the middle of a busy period for the club, which includes the National BUCS head race next weekend.
