Another title for Birmingham hockey girls!

The University of Birmingham hockey girls clinched another title on Wednesday, beating Loughborough in the dying minutes of a tense match.

After some impressive results from the national league team, it was the turn of the university’s fourth team to take the glory by winning the BUCS Midlands Conference Cup 2-1.

UBSport took the lead early with a short corner by Sammy Tilley. The game then remained at 1-0 until the last 10 minutes when Loughborough scored from a short corner, bringing the game to a nerve-wracking 1-1.

Sammy repeated her success when Birmingham were award another short corner with 3 minutes to go, taking them to a 2-1 lead. With 30 seconds to go Loughborough were awarded another short corner but they failed to make use of the opportunity – much to UBSports delight.

Team captain Rachel Walters said; “There were superb performances form the whole team especially Sammy, Jess Smith and Helen Marsden in the goal.

“This has been an exceptional season for the ladies 4s,” she continued, “Winning the BUCS cup final was the gold medal the team deserved.”
