The University of Birmingham Sport American Football club coach has been shortlisted for British American Football Coaches Association ‘coach of the year’.
Tony Athersmith (who was also shortlisted for UBSport Coach of the Year) has been coaching since 1992, becoming assistant coach to the Lions in 2003 and Head Coach in 2007. He has helped them take home the National Championship trophy for two years running.
Tony says: “Obviously I was surprised at being informed I had been shortlisted, its not something I had given any thoughts too. Regards of the final outcome I would consider this a team award if I do win.
“I need to give thanks to the players (and committee) for their focus and commitment all year, coaching staff for those endless hours away from home and their families 3 times a week for 6 months and UBSport & the University for their continuing support that everyone else in football is so very envious of. We are already planning for next year and we are so looking forward to the xplosion event vs Loughborough.”
The award will be announced the first weekend in July.
