Taekwondo -Mahammad Ouattara

On 4-5 March 2017, University of Birmingham Taekwondo Club made an outstanding performance at the 31st Student National Taekwondo Championships at University of Worcester Arena.

The club eight competitors came away with an impressive five medals in sparring, with Ismael Mekene Coulibaly and Mahammad Ouattara also qualifying for the European Universities Championships in July 2017, to be held in Portugal.

  • Ismael Mekene Coulibaly - gold
  • Mahammad Ouattara - gold
  • Jayan Patel - gold
  • Mohamed Fawzy - silver
  • Usman Ali - bronze

Mahammad's victory was a personal one - the semi-final found him sparring an old adversary from Imperial College London, to whom he lost last year.

Ismael spoke of his experience in the ring:

"I just managed to stay in control of my matches; it wasn't easy because I fought in a higher category, but Alhamdoulillah I got through the fatigue and won all my way to the final. Now I'm back to training in order to be ready for the World Taekwondo Federation President Cup.

My ultimate goal in Taekwondo is the Olympics and I'll give my best to qualify for Tokyo 2020 InshAllah. I am aware that this is the hardest challenge of my life but if your dream doesn't scare you, there's no point in dreaming."

Outside of the ring, club secretary Sofia Browne stepped in last minute as volunteer corner judge, a role in which she excelled.

As a successful spring term draws to an end, the club are busy with preparations to host a demonstration from a prestigeous Malaysian Taekwondo team at University of Birmingham in Autumn 2017.
