First year war studies student Tom Flathers will be UBSports official photographer during his year long internship and as such will be involved in photographing big events and Wednesday BUCS fixtures as well as some other key projects. He’ll also be given the opportunity to complete a professional development qualification or course.
Glendon O’Donovan, Marketing manager for UBSport and Tom’s mentor throughout the placement says: “This is a new and potentially very exciting venture for both us and Tom. It will provide us with a good deal of new photography while at the same time providing him with a wealth of hands on experience in a practical real world environment and continuing professional development”.
Tom got his first digital SLR camera just after his GCSE’s and began doing sports photography about 6 months later for his sixth form and local football club. His major achievements in photography however have involved being the official photographer for the national tennis championship ‘The Malvern Open’, covering two international fixtures for England Rounders as well as attending three consecutive Wimbledon Championships.
“I am incredibly excited to be the first university photography intern,” says Tom. “I was delighted before coming to the university about the photography opportunities I would have but to be given an internship as well and be able to help Munrow with advertising and promoting the universities sport is an amazing opportunity.”
“I’m most looking forward to the BUCS championship in Sheffield next year where I will be able to shoot the very best sportsmen and women in the country. However, every Wednesday is always really exciting as I know I am in the privileged position of shooting some fantastic players.”
This internship is one of four areas that are part of the student internship programme with UBSport. The programme provides further opportunities for students to gain applied experience within the sports arena, focussing on the development of the individual’s practical skill base within their specialist/chosen field.
