After a run of huge, easy wins for the two times National champions at this event over the past few years, the British University American Football League responded to the Lions request for some ‘proper competition’ by putting them up against fellow former champions the Loughbough Aces.
Indeed the Lions seemed to have met their match in Loughborough when, despite many opportunities for both sides, at half time the game was pointless.
While both teams were having their half time team talks, the crowd of over 1000 were treated to two impressive dance squad and cheerleader routines, followed by an explosive fireworks show - all of which were met by a vocal and exuberant crowd.
With the crowd keyed up, both teams returned to the pitch and it wasn’t long before the home side gave them something else to cheer about, when shortly into the third quarter they took a two point lead.
A touchdown scored soon after secured Birmingham’s position, taking them to 9-0; the score which remained until the final whistle.
Speaking after the event, Club captain John Zinkus said “We all stuck together and the defence in particular stepped up when it counted most, getting the safety to get us on the board. The offence also showed flashes of potential but we have to get more consistent if we want to repeat the National Title. However, the most important thing is getting the win! It was another fantastic event and huge thanks must go to UBSport and the crowd for continuing to support XpLosION and helping us showcase our sport.”
