As well as having a hugely successful summer under their belts, the UBSport Golf club has extra grounds for confidence going into new university sporting season thanks to support of their new patron.
Golf Professional, renowned coach and PGA Cup Captain Gary Alliss will be involved in supporting members of the university golf club alongside his current role as Head Professional at The Belfry.
“Since coming to work at the Belfry four years ago my interest in and involvement with the university students has grown and I’m thoroughly enjoying my patron role so far. Although Alistair Davies (newly appointed coach) looks after them on a day to day basis I try and keep abreast of all that he is doing.”
Alliss is a household name on the golfing circuit with Gary boasting a famous heritage in both his father - English golfer, BBC television presenter and commentator Peter Alliss, and grandfather Percy Alliss, also a professional golfer who won several tournaments on the European golf circuit.
“With very famous forebears I was determined to make my mark on the profession in some way or other” explains Gary. “I tried as a player but did not get to the top flight so becoming the best coach that I could and developing my model through research and practical teaching is the route I have chosen.”
And it’s a route that has proven to be hugely successful with Gary having been a British PGA Instructor for many years and has been voted one of the top 25 Golf Coaches in Great Britain and Ireland as organised by Golf Monthly magazine.
Gary is also one of only 25 others to have gained PGA Master Professional status, which is the highest PGA accolade. Gary is the first to achieve this status via an academic route, linked to coaching expertise.
Having been heavily involved with training young professionals since the mid eighties Gary has a keen interest in development, appreciating the importance of promising golfers having a mentor.
“Training and further education have always been a priority for me. When I started as a pro in the early 70s you had to try to find your own way and I have always felt that help could and should be more readily available for those who want to push themselves forward. It may sound a bit twee I know, but golf is not a bad basis as a model for how to behave in business and life!”
