Alex Taylor - Performance Sport Manager

Alex has worked at UBSport since 2006 and currently heads up the Hi Performance Centre and the sport scholarship programmes at the University. She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the team having been involved in athlete support for the past 20 years. This has included athletes and coaches from the Scottish and English Institutes of Sport, professional football, NGB national programmes as well as university athletes. Her specialist interest is in the design and delivery of multidisciplinary support models for transitional stage athletes and is currently completing a professional doctorate in this area: Elite Performance. In addition Alex continues to provide specialist training and assessment in the monitoring of body composition (ISAK Accreditation) in the UK and across Europe. 
Qualifications: BSc (Hons), MSc , BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist (Physiology & Interdisciplinary Support), BASES Accredited Laboratory Director, ISAK Level 3 Anthropometrist.

Eleanor Jones - Senior Sports Scientist (Nutrition & Physiology)

Eleanor has been the senior sport scientist at UBSport since 2007. Prior to joining the Hi Performance Centre she worked with several athletes and teams including British Swimming, British Triathlon and professional footballers. A BASES accredited sport scientist, she oversees the day-to-day delivery of support services to our clients. Eleanor has a special interest in weight management and optimising body composition - providing specialist nutritional advice, support and planning to her clients. 
Qualifications: BSc, (Hons), MSc Exercise Physiology, BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist BASES - Physiology Support, IOC Diploma Sports Nutrition, ISAK Level 2 Anthropometrist.

Alex McGregor - Sports Science Officer (Physiology)

Alex has worked at UBSport since September 2007, having previously worked at Loughborough University while completing his MSc in Exercise Physiology. He has worked with a multitude of sports but currently heads up the Sport Science Support for the University Squash, Swimming and Athletics (Sprints) teams as well as supporting a range of external clients. This work ranges from laboratory testing, to in session monitoring, and everything in between to ensure the athletes get the reward they deserve for the hard work they put into training. As a physiologist Alex has a keen interest in environmental physiology, particularly the effects of altitude and temperature on the ability to perform. Subsequently Alex specialises in helping people prepare for extreme physical challenges.

Jennifer Savage - Sport Science Officer (Psychology)

Jennifer joined the HPC team in April 2010 after completing her Masters in Sport & Exercise Science at Bangor University. Jennifer is responsible for the provision and delivery of sport psychology support for UBS scholar athletes and University performance teams. This involves working with a range of sports, (both individual and team) alongside an interdisciplinary team integrating an effective support programmes. Jennifer is currently working with several potential Olympic athletes in preparation for 2012. She is also currently under-going BASES and BPS supervised experience in addition to a part-time PhD.

Darran Fowler - Head Strength & Conditioning Coach

Darran joined the team at the beginning of 2011, having previously worked as an S&C coach for Durham University, Hartlepool United FC and Wasps RUFC. He is the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach leading a team of 4 highly qualified S&C coaches. He is responsible for the programming and delivery to a wide range of athletes including UBS scholar athletes, university priority teams as well supporting a number of NGB programmes. He is currently the Lead S&C coach for TASS programme at Birmingham, overseeing the support throughout the region. He is a UKSCA and NSCA accredited strength & conditioning coach and is currently completing a MSc in Sports Therapy allowing him to work more effectively within a multi-disciplinary team.
Qualifications: BSc (Hons), UKSCA Accredited, ISAK Level 1. 

Ray Jakeman - Associate Strength & Conditioning Coach

Ray is a part time S&C coach and has been with the HPC team since 2010. His responsibility include programming and coaching several of the university sport teams such as swimming and rugby union as well as providing the programming and support for the remote TASS athletes based out of the Birmingham hub. In addition to his work at the HPC he also provides strength and conditioning support for the midlands division of the RFUW and Strength2Peform. Previously Ray has worked with England athletics, Worcester Warriors and the ECB.
Qualifications: BSc (Hon) MSc in Strength & Conditioning, UKSCA Accredited, ISAK level 1.

Mike Gosling - Senior Physiotherapist

Mike is one of the lead physiotherapists within the Hi Performance Centre. He qualified in 1997 at University of Southampton, working in NHS hospitals and privately in orthopaedics and musculoskeletal medicine before specialising in sports physiotherapy. In 2003 he set up his own private practice in Birmingham (Physiokinetic Ltd) with colleague Peter Hatton. Mike has a wealth of experience in dealing with athletes from many sports, having worked with England Lacrosse, Warwickshire County Cricket Club (ongoing) and his current role at The University of Birmingham. He is currently the lead Physio for the TASS programme at Birmingham working with all athletes including disability athletes as well as UBSport scholars. He is currently undergoing accreditation for the ACPSM silver award.

Pete Hatton - Senior Physiotherapist

Pete is one of the lead physiotherapists within the Hi Performance Centre. He graduated from Southampton University in 1997. He has extensive experience in treating sports injuries having worked with a number of elite sports organisations and teams over the last 14 years including Warwickshire CCC, Moseley RFC, England Swimming, England Badminton, National League Basketball, Formula 1 motor racing and a number of other national and international athletes under the TASS and UBS sports scholarships system. Prior to 2006, he also worked as an Extended Scope Physiotherapist where he assessed and treated patients referred from GP’s into a district orthopaedic service where he was responsible for listing patients for surgery, ordering investigations and performing soft tissue and joint injections. He is currently undergoing accreditation for the ACPSM silver award.

Luke Gunn - Sports Scholarship Manager

Luke has been the Sports Scholarships Manager for University of Birmingham Sport and the TASS Regional Hub Manager for the West Midlands since April 2010. Luke offers lifestyle support to all sports scholars at the university across a broad range of sports and performance levels; with the aim of nurturing junior potential into future senior sports stars.

Luke draws on his own sporting experience as an international distance runner; competing at the Commonwealth Games in 2006 and 2010, the 4-time and current UK Steeplechase Champion from 2009-2013, whilst also captaining both the Florida State University and University of Birmingham athletics teams to National titles during his academic career.

Luke has coached and delivered at a number of workshops, courses and conferences on subjects such as: time-management, peer pressure, organization, dealing with adversity, goal setting, professionalism, media training, living away from home, healthy living and ownership.

Organisations Luke has worked closely with on such sessions include: Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme, British Athletics, England Athletics, England and GB Hockey, On Camp with Kelly (Holmes), Girls Go Gold Conference and British Triathlon.
