Jon PepperBlogger profile: Jon Pepper is a 3rd Year Sports and Exercise Student. He competed for GB&NI in the Junior race at the 2006 European Cross Country Championships, and won the 2007 UK Junior Intercounty Cross Country Championships. Having been automatically selected for that year’s World Cross Country Championships in Kenya, Jon was diagnosed with a stress fracture just two weeks before the event. Jon has suffered two further stress fractures, and after returning to fitness in time for this year’s BUCS Championships, was dealt another cruel blow when the event was cancelled due to snow. Despite his setbacks, Jon never looses focus on maximizing his potential. His optimism is infectious, and his is an inspiration to those around him. He is happy to help others and has been an outstanding cross country caption this year despite the cancellation of the aforementioned BUCS championships. Jon has volunteered to keep us updated on his progress as he completes his final few months at Birmingham, and prepares for life in the ‘real world’.
Sian James
Blogger profile: Sian James, first year Applied Golf Management Studies, is very much the person to beat among University Female student golfers at the moment. Already, she has won two England and Wales University Qualifier Tournaments, and the prestigious R&A Bursars Tournament. Forming an integral part of the University 1st Team, and competing against male opponents on a weekly basis, it’s not just the females that have to raise their game. Sian has a current handicap of +1.5 and will look to improve that even further during her 3 years at Birmingham. Sian will be keeping us updated on her progress, and support services that she utilises as part of her scholarship.
David Kettle
Blogger profile: Hockey goalkeeper David Kettle epitomises the dedicated athlete. A final year Sport, PE and Community Studies (SPECS) student, David has shown outstanding commitment to maximising his sporting potential while studying at Birmingham. David plays his Hockey for Cannock and Wales, and has represented his club Cannock, and Welsh U16, U18 and U21 sides in European competitions. He was names goalkeeper of the tournament at the 2005 U18 Euros.
Over the coming months David is going to keep us informed of his progress both on and off the field, and update us on his future career choices.
Oliver Ziff
Oliver Ziff is one of the many promising young triathletes currently training here at the University of Birmingham. The current BUCS Olympic Distance Champion has just finished his first year of Medicine at the university, and has offered to take some time out of his busy schedule to keep us updated on how he is managing to combine a demanding academic course, with training for 3 sports combined in 1. Oliver is improving with every race, and we look forward to following his progress.
Sport and Exercise Sciences student James Wilkinson has been the top junior steeplechaser in GB for the past two seasons, as well as picking up two GB Cross Country vests. James has just completed his most successful year to date which included competing at the Commonwealth Youth Games, the World Cross Country Championships and the European Junior T&F Championships as well as knocking huge chunks off his 1500m, 3,000m and 3,000m steeplechase PBs. James has agreed to share his experiences, and to keep us updated on his progress.
